I found a seed pod on one of my iris plants last year. I let it dry out before I cut it off. Has anyone ever had any luck growing their own irises from seed?

Yes I have with Japanese Iris and Louisana Iris, and I have a yellow iris that gets about 4ft. tall if given enough water that makes a lot of seed,I just let them dry and fall where they may because I like my garden to have a lot of disorder in the planting or let Mother Nature have her way ...

So it sounds like you didn't do anything special - just let the seeds fall to the ground instead of putting them in a starting medium or giving them any special attention? Did you bury them or cover them up with some soil or anything? How about watering - did you water them more than the grown plants?

Usually I just let them fall,I don't cover them up and when they come up I do water them more .especially when it get hot and dry. I do have a small flower bed that I use to start seed in, when I start iris seed in it I cover the seed with about 1/4 inch soil and water it good. When they come up I try to keep the grass out and give them miracle grow about every two weeks. You may think they are grass when they first come up,as they grow they will look more like iris,it may take 2 or 3 years before they bloom good. I like to start plants when I find seed pods just to see what I get..
